Saturday11th August

The Cubs had kept Akela awake for the majority of the night, traipsing backwards and forwards to the loo.

Our first breakfast of the weekend was: a bowl of cereal - with or with out milk; 'eggy' bread, sausages and an option on beans, no beans or spag hoops. This was welcomed with a great reduction in the general noise level. This meal was to provide the fuel for the first part of a busy day.

After cleaning their teeth the Cubs were sent out to drag back what wood there was at the wood pile. This was mainly pallets, very well put together pallets that took quite a bit of breaking and sawing up. While Akela, Ian and Hathi sorted out the fire the Cubs were invited to do a little bit of carving. They were not allowed anything sharper than a spoon or fork and supervised by Sandra. They were given half a bar of soap, something of an new experience to some of them as the only soap they knew about was a fluid that came out of a pump bottle. They were told to remove bits of the soap to reveal the hidden object. This caused a small problem as some Cubs found that inside their bar of soap was a lot of little bits of soap!

Once the fire was nice and hot the branding irons were produced .The Cubs had to draw a design onto a piece of wood that they would then brand with the hot metal. As only two Cubs were able to do this the rest were sent to play in the park area next to the hall. At 11:00 we had a break, it was hot and sunny (as expected) and the Cubs were thirsty. More play and branding before Akela dragged a table across and prepared to do some backwoods cooking, this brought the Cubs back from the park, James did his bit with kissing the better looking of the two mackerel before it was gutted, wrapped in wet newspaper and put carefully into the embers of the fire to cook. Jack helped Akela pull the head and spine out of the  second fish with an interesting look on his face, Jacks face not the fish's. Oranges and bananas were improved by adding chocolate to them. Hathi's favourite, an egg cooked in an orange was made and he was very grateful. The fish was taste tested, none got back to Akela so we can only assume that it was enjoyed.

Lunch was brought out and eaten and the Cubs were sent to their rooms to write up their diaries and let their food settle before the running around that would be next.

We have, on previous camps, modified the athlete's badge to suit our needs with long slides instead of jumps, we were closer to the 'real' requirements this time but still managed to get water involved. The fifty metre dash was enlivened by the Cubs having to carry a washing bowl filled with water, the timing was adjusted slightly to offset this handicap, A long jump past Leaders with cups of water to mark where the Cubs landed. Not sure if Vicki's idea of standing the other side of the Cubs from the rest of the Leaders as she managed to catch quite a lot of the water thrown. Throwing the cricket ball became catch the water filled sandwich bag, distance away from Akela - the thrower gave the difference in the points allocation. Then there was a 1000 metre run with the runners being cooled down by the Leaders to avoid heat stroke. After this it all got a bit silly with Akela having to hide behind Sandra as the water-fight started. The cooks team managed to get into the action and soon almost everybody got wet.

Tea was 'spag bol' or pasta with minced meat with or with out bolognaise sauce, with ice-cream and fruit salad. The response to the Cubs being asked who wanted fruit salad was a deafening silence, not one Cub was interested.

At 18:30 we wandered up to meet Alan who was to be our instructor for our archery activity. The safety rules were explained and the Cubs were warned that any messing about would result in exclusion from the activity. Quite a few of the Cubs ended up putting an arrow into the gold mind you quite a lot of the Cubs managed to miss the targets completely and it was while looking for a 'lost' arrow that an 'alien' arrow was found by Akela. It wasn't one of Alan's arrows. during the two hours that we were shooting / loosing / firing we (Akela) found the missing arrow from before plus two more 'alien' arrows. We had found a complete set of arrows that had not been taken out by Alan.

The Cubs were shown a classic DVD and were sworn to secrecy about it's title, it was enjoyed by the Cubs who, towards the end some of them, were ready for bed. As the Cubs showed signs of tiredness i.e. snoring they were advised to go to bed. at 23:50 we gave in and turned the second film off and sent the four or five 'hard' Cubs to bed. The Leaders watched a little bit of their film before realising that the last Cubs had gone silent and we could get to our own beds.

It had been a long busy day that the Cubs had seemed to enjoy. now we had to prepare for Sunday.
