District Quiz – The Final

This years final, the last under the old District of South East Bristol, was to be changed slightly – rather than round two which would have been three sets of three teams and then the final, it was decided that we would do it ‘Scout Style’ with all nine teams at once.

Herein lies a small problem, Akela the Quiz Master now had to prepare the questions and each round potentially had to have 36 questions!!

Not to be beaten, I devised a cunning plan, and decided that the quiz round’s would alternate between a Team round and an Individual round, hence effectively halving the number of question I had to prepare.

Round 1 – Individual

General Knowledge;

This was designed to ease the Cubs gently into the quiz and ensure that all teams got some points onto the board

Round 2 – Team

Flags of the World;

12 pictures of different flags from around the world with a bonus point if all were identified correctly. The round was a times round and only started after a scramble to cover up a ‘Flags of the World’ poster on the wall which all of the Cubs, none of the Leaders and only one parent had spotted.

Round 3 – Individual

Maths;

Simple multiplication, adding subtracting & division. Everyone was brilliant on somebody else’s question, but the pressure told when it was theirs. Even some of the parents looked a bit crestfallen.

Round 4; - Team

Crack the Code;

Easy, areas of Bristol written backwards. All the Cubs had to do was figure that the words were backwards and then reverse them – maybe a little harder than I thought although some teams scored the full marks available our Cubs worked out that ‘DOOWKCOTS’ was ‘STOCKWOOD’ and then became stuck.

Round 5; - Individual

General Knowledge, Perhaps the Cubs general knowledge is not quite as good as it could be

Round 6; - Team

Map Reading

What can be found in box D6 for example, most of the Cubs managed to crack this one

Round 7; ˝ a Team

Maths, a team effort with the two younger members and then the two older members working together.

Round 8; - Team

Spelling, a tem effort, 10 words, 4 different spelling for each word just underline the correct spelling

Round 9; - Individual

Famous People. An individual round of who’s who

Round 10 – Team

Fire Dangers, a picture round for the Cubs to highlight all of the potential fire hazards in the picture.

After all if this and a potential 100 points up for grabs we had a tie for first place, well done to 145th and 148 Tuesday Cubs on achieving 77 points each and taking the trophy home.

Our Cubs, Deanna, Daniel (1), Daniel (2) and Alex didn’t do so badly, they didn’t come 9th but most importantly they did enjoy themselves and it was good to see all of the Cubs shaking hands with each other and congratulating the winners

Some of the Highlights

According to one Cub the capital city of Canada was Mexico, but upon realising his mistake shouted Calcutta, close but not close enough

Who wears a Bearskin? The Guards you might think, but no! The answer given was Cavemen we had to give the point

In the bible David fought a giant, who was he? The answer ‘The Big G’, but the Cub did know his real name
