District Swimming Gala

25th September

After several weeks of swimming practice, working towards Swimming Activity badges and annoying the life guards we had picked our team for the District Gala.

The great day came and we were the first Pack to arrive due to the start time being 15 minutes later than we expected. The Cubs got changed and were reassured that they would be called in plenty of time for their race. A quick team talk by Akela "Go out there, do your best and have fun!"
Our ADC (Cubs) arrived and set up the judges table, at the last minute our Akela was asked to do the PA. He was only too happy to do this for the Cubs.

Event 1
10 year old Free-style
Bradley swam well and came third but as only two went through from the heat, his swimming was over for the night.

Event 2
10 year old Breast-stroke
Charlotte swam this for us, came second and had to stay in her swim-costume until the finals

Event 3
9 year old Free-style
Emma was a bit out of her depth against some very fast Cubs in her heat and was unable to continue into the finals

Event 4
9 year old Breast-stroke
Georgina tried hard, swan well but was not able to finish in the first two.

Event 5

1 length Back-Stroke
Jess swam like a young fish and by coming second was through to the final, hooray

Event 6
8 year old 2 widths Free-style
Tom, an ex Tuesday Cub was outstanding and won his heat, this event was livened up by a Cub getting lost and instead of doing a second width managed to swim a length. To much applause it must be said.

Event 7
1 length Free-Style Relay. Paris, Sammy and Aimee were our swimmers, Paris got a reasonable first leg, Sammy a very fast second leg and Aimee came through to take second place in the heat a a place in the final.

Event 8
1 Width 'Egg and Spoon'
Deanna was very good and went through into the finals with her second place.

Event 9
Diving Competition
After a practice dive, the competitors had three dives to make as high a score as possible. To maintain impartiality two volunteer judges were taken from the crowd and asked to do this really hard job. They did a brilliant job of recognising Breiz as the best diver marking her three excellent dives highly enough to give her first place.

The Finals

Charlotte in her final was beaten into third place, a close result.

Jess in her final was beaten by a smaller margin but into second place, making all the team happy.

Then Tom made our night by becoming our second winner of the night.

The start of the relay should have be forgotten, but a fine fight back by all three swimmers gave us a creditable third place.

To round off the night Deanna cam third in her final so we has scored in all the finals that we had swum in. This resulted in us coming third overall in the Gala, a few points behind the 15th and a long way behind Tuesday Cubs, who won. Very well done to them, again.
