At Eastwinds 17th January
Akela was asked to be quizmaster by Simon (ADC Cubs), he replied in the affirmative and found himself having to make up the questions as well.
The Cubs were asked on the last Pack night who would like to take part in the quiz and we had to pick the 'best' four. Breiz, Paris, Deanna and James, as Captain, were picked. After Cubs we discovered that James had forgotten that he was going to be hundreds of miles away on Saturday. He was slightly unhappy about this but cheered up when he found that Akela had put the wrong month on the letter that he was supposed to give his parents. So we had to pick a substitute Captain. Ryan C was the Cub and he was delighted to find out.

The day of the quiz dawned nice and sunny, you could just tell that Akela was involved! Baggy had been persuaded to go with Akela nice and early to Eastwinds to help with the catering and to supply support to the organisers. This meant that Hathi had to pick the team up and drive them to Eastwinds. It had been decided that no parents were to come along as they might be a distraction. Despite Hathi's ability to get lost almost anywhere, we arrived in time for our heat. Sadly only the 146th had turned up so a scratch team of Leaders and drivers were cobbled together to fill the last table. They were told at the outset that they would not win, but to try hard anyway.
The teams were sat down in age order and the questioning started.
Round 1
General knowledge; the Leaders did well our Cubs did not, scoring only one point, they got a lot of bonus questions right but sadly they did not count.
Round 2
Nature; The Leaders were robbed wicked, a answer of "oh dear... could it be oak" to the question what do acorns grow into was ruled as incorrect as only the first answer could be taken and "oh dear" was wrong. Our Cubs got 100% in this round but sadly didn't score a point.
Round 3
Occupation: Paris scored in this round to match her sister in the first round.
Round 4
Numbers; Another 100% from our Cubs but again no points
Round 5
A picture round; A picture of an everyday home situation that had at least ten potential hazards, the Leaders team found about fifteen, including a dodgy looking sofa that looked highly flammable and a horrible colour as well. The Cubs did well and scored an impressive nine points
Round 6
Opposites; Easy - hard. 100% again but this time full marks. Well done to the Cubs, they were starting to relax and enjoy themselves.
Round 7
Miscellaneous; in pairs a round of general knowledge then an "Angela Special Round" - in previous years Angela (ADC)retired had put in some mental maths questions, which were always met with groans of excitement. Well Alex always enjoyed them. This time it resulted in much head scratching, the Leaders were helped out by their reserve. The Cubs did well with Deanna and Breiz getting the maths wrong and the other correct and Ryan and Paris managed the opposite. (see round 6)
Round 8
Nursery Rhymes; Another old favourite. The younger Cubs were obviously too up-to-date to know many nursery rhymes but the older Cubs did well.
Round 9
People; The Cubs did another 100% correct round, and were really enjoying themselves.
Round 10
Tools; An awkward round with the Cubs not knowing who used a stethoscope and who fixed glasses.
The final scores were; Leaders Disqualified for receiving outside help in the mental maths part, otherwise we would have got 40 points out of a possible 50, the 146th managed 27 and go on to next weeks semi final. The 148 Wednesday Cubs came a gallant second with 25, a close result but one that meant that we would have next Saturday off.
Thanks to Simon and Akela for organising and running it to Baggy for getting up in the middle of the night to go and help.
