Summer Camp at Huish Woods

 18th August to 22nd August

Camps do not just happen!

Akela has spent a great deal of time organising this Camp. It was unanimously decided that after last years camp at Parkend that we would be back to Huish Woods this year. The dates were decided early in the new year, holidays were booked by the Leaders.

As we had been to Huish several times we knew what to expect and what was available for the Cubs to do. Activities were booked, loosely at first, the site were given a list of activities we would like to do and they were asked to arrange times for instructors and sole use of the facilities. Akela even rang the tourist information centre at Minehead to find out when high tide was to be on our day out to make sure that we would have enough beach to play on.

The day-out to Minehead was such a success last time (thanks to Debbie, Akela of Tuesday Cubs for putting us onto this). The swim was sorted out with a little bit of negotiation to ensure we were to be in the right place at the right time, i.e. when the wave machine was working.

The menu was discussed and revised and discussed and the positive feedback from the Survival camp for the food prepared there, helped us to sort out what the Cubs would be eating.

Money was collected, deposits paid and the camp started to take shape. The colour of the camp tee shirts was decided, a nice Burgundy with green and white lettering, lovely.

August arrived!! Dates and times were confirmed for the activities, both on and off site, the bus was booked, the trailer was picked up and Akela had done "trolley rage" at Tesco so the food was bought. Then horrors, one of the Leaders had to pull out for family reasons. One of the mums stepped into the breach, we had enough Leaders for the number of Cubs we were taking.

On the last Cub night before camp, the Cubs kit was brought to the Scutt ready to be packed. The QM had got all the equipment that we had asked for ready for us, we were nearly ready.

The weekend before we left was hectic. A couple of mums came along with their Cubs to help load the trailer, thanks to Abi, Trudi, Dan, Alison, the twins and Ryan. The loading was done so quickly that we were not able to go into the Harvesters for a swift lemonade as planned.

Last minute panic meant the Leaders were busy Sunday afternoon rushing about in decreasing circles getting their packing done and dealing with all the last minute things that inevitably occur.

Just think someone said in a weeks time it will be all over. This did not help!

A couple of beers to calm the nerves and an early night. Well sort of!
