Conkers Night

Oct 9th

Scutt

Tonight we had our annual conker knockout competition, following on from recent scare stories about conkers being banned by some schools as being to dangerous it was decided that the old custom of stamping on an opponents conker if it fell to the floor would be outlawed.

Hathi and his son Colin had picked up a couple of kilograms of conkers and Hathi had spent a happy hour drilling them out ready for stringing. The holes were made large to ensure that they would split in a reasonable time. In fact so many were picked up that the excess was passed on to the St Georgina's Scout troop for their conker night.

The draw was announced and Levi was picked against the Leaders but bravely battled through to the final where she met Mike who had narrowly beaten a red hot favourite Alex in the semi final. The Final was played over fifteen minutes with two falls a knock out or a submission to decide the winner. The non combatants were stood around the circle and the gladiators took aim and tried to damage their opponents conker, the partisan support for each player was very very loud. After fifteen minutes with no result it was down to a judges decision, The condition of each conker was examined and as Levi's conker was not as badly damaged as Mike's she was named conkerer of 2002, received a certificate and a round of applause.
