Cross Country

After problems with the farmer not wanting Cubs running across his fields and taking significant quantities of his top soil home with them, this event has been moved to our area.

Akela and Hathi spent nearly a whole hour planning this event, who was to make the tea, the hot dogs, etc. The route was planned and walked by Akela the weekend before the event and a superb map was drawn, sadly this was dissolved in an accident with a cup of orange juice after the event so only a facsimile is available.

The actual route was to include as much mud as possible with a water hazard if we could fit one in! We also have a nice steep hill to sort out the Cubs out.

Saturday morning Akela and Hathi meet up and mark out the course with some small yellow flags. Hathi has the easier drier half and is soon explaining to the local dog walkers what is about to happen. The walk back to the Scutt up the hill is hard work, and we're expecting the Cubs to run up it!

The Hill

11:00 arrives and a small team of marshals set out to take up positions on the course so that no Cubs get lost or take shortcuts. The fun starts the Cubs are overjoyed to find out that this run will involve terrain that is not flat.

The pace is fast and the Cubs tear round the course so quickly that we may have to put another loop next year. The going was soft to firm and in places steep. Our Team of Alex, Tom, Levi, Ryan, Mike and Tom were well spread out which was to result in a very close finish in the team event.

Full speed Full steam ahead Hopping to give the others a chance

Two Tuesday Cubs were very close and finished 1st and 2nd. Tom H was third for us with Alex 6th. Tom received a certificate and award for his effort. The Team event was very close and as the 8 packs that had entered waited the more fancied Packs were at the lower end of things, when neither of the Stockwood Packs had been mentioned by the time we got to the top three our hopes were high. Naturally Tuesday with their first and second beat us, we were third but only by a tiny margin. The team retained the trophy from the last time this was run and certificates and individual awards  were handed out.

For third place . . .

Thanks to Akela (Andy) and Akela (Debbie) for organising and running the event, thanks to the parents and helpers who stood out in the mud and wet grass making sure that it all went safely. Also thanks to Angela for all her efforts and get well soon to Wendy who could not attend due to illness.

The profits from the sale of hot-dogs was donated to District Funds as the Funds had taken a knock at the last Swimming Gala.
