Sports Day
 Part 1

Thursday night at The Park, a few Cubs turned up, Alex, Sam, Tom W and Jess. Everybody else was either at home or at a kick-boxing rehearsal for the School Fayre on the Saturday. Not a very good start.

Alex was talked into the Long Jump while Tom went to do his thing in the High Jump. He returned fairly quickly and informed us that he had failed, as he had done his best, we were not disappointed with him. Alex managed to come fourth in his event. This left only Sam or Jess to do the cricket ball throw. Between them it was decided that Jess would do the throwing as Sam had to save his strength for the Tug-of-War.

Flying Throw

We did not get far in our heat of the T-o-W as most of the other teams had the regulation six Cubs, Akela offered a slap up pizza meal if the Cubs won. Against the 82nd (I think) they managed a win and there were big smiles all round. In a T-o-w at the end of the evening we had a volunteer from the audience, whose name we never ascertained so thanks to you anonymous Cub, we won this one two as Akela told a fib about his height and weight and acted as anchor 'Cub'.

Pull Lots of effort

It was suggested in the car ride home by Abi that as the Cubs had won they deserved a pizza! We shall see what happens.

Thanks to the Cubs that turned up and stayed, to Angela and Simon for organising and running it

(This next bit is by Akela)

District Sports day

22nd June 2002

Saturday afternoon was cloudy and overcast with a threat of rain, but never fear the Sun God is here to try and reclaim his crown after last weekend at Eastwinds when we suffered a heavy dewfall.

Our team arrived, and like other packs we found ourselves a little short of bodies. A swiftly organised ‘enrolment’ of some brothers and sisters and we were almost to strength. Many thanks to Joss and to Ryan, two Tuesday Pack Cubs, who helped us in our time of need. Aimee then arrived fresh from her dance class to complete our squad.

Jess, Tom W, Alex M, Aimee, Robert (new enrolee – Tom’s brother), and Beth (new enrolee – Jesse’s sister) this is our team.

Our Cubs

Event 1

80 yards dash (I thought this measurement is illegal, but apparently not for Scouting)

Jess managed a credible 3rd place – she’s in the finals

Event 2

90 yards dash

Josh (Tuesday Cub) did his very best and managed a 4th place. Only the first 3 go through to the finals.

Event 3

100 yards dash

Alex was brilliant, pulling up short at the end of 100 yards and taking 2nd place. He is obviously saving himself for the finals.

Event 4

Tug of War finals.

The heats had been held last Thursday where we had been pulled all over the park. Not our teams fault but more a lack of bodies through those who did not show.

The final was fought between 148th Tuesday Pack and the 107th Whitchurch. Whitchurch were the clear winners winning the “best of 3” pulls 2 – 0

Event 5

Sack Race

Robert (one of our enrolee’s) jumped for glory and managed a very credible 4th position.

Event 6

Egg & Spoon

A traditional favorite, golf balls instead of eggs, Jess lead the field all the way to the line. 2 yards to go and the ball fell from her spoon. She was piped at the post and made 4th

Event 7

Medley Relay

All of our team plus Ryan (Tuesday – Ex Wednesday Cub so we are OK) take part. 3 parts to this race. Jess started the race with the hoops, followed by Tom and Alex doing the 3 legged bit (counting 1-2, 1-2, 1-2 etc not their strong suit). Ryan finished the race for us carrying Robert in piggyback style. Our team did well and made 3rd place, another finals for us.

Event 8

Fireman's Chair.

Tom and Alex were to run, with Aimee being carried. Unfortunately we didn’t make the finals as we finished 4th

Event 9

Relay race, 6 Cubs. 3 at each end of a 100 yards sprint all to change ends one at a time. The Cubs were left to themselves to decide who ran which way but the order was

Jess – Tom – Beth – Robert – Aimee – Alex.

Not last, but not in the final.

So near . . . They did thier best

The Finals

We were to take part in 3 finals, Jess in the 50 yards, Alex in the 100 yards and the team in the medley.

Jess maintained her place and finished 3rd. Alex got a 5th and in the Medley we finished 6th – but we made the finals.

Out of the 20 or so packs in our district only 10 entered and despite having a team slightly short on numbers we finished in overall 9th place with 15 points. Congratulations to 256th who finished first with a lot more points than us.

Thanks as always to the organizers, Angela, Wendy and their team of helpers too numerous to mention.

Thanks to our Cubs who represented their Pack and did their best. Thanks to the new enrollee’s who helped us.

It didn’t rain and the sun shone so I reclaim a part of my crown.
