District Athletes Badge Day
27th April

At The Park, formally Merryfield Boys School, in Knowle. Lots of Cubs and Leaders turned up at 09:30 ready to start but there was no sign of the organisers, at 09:55 with the event due to start some of the Packs moved around to the back of the building and the organisers were there waiting and wondering where everybody was.

The Cubs, Becky2, Ben, Georgia, Tom, Alex, Shaun, Steph2, Sam and Tom2 were our representatives and a fine body of Cubs they were. Alex was so hard he actually turned up in shorts. Each Cub could enter four events and try to score enough points to achieve a Badge. Also attending were Steph1 and Lauren who would be running around assisting Akela with his Event.

We started with the Long Jump.
3m for 3 points, 2.5m for 2 points and 2m for 1 point.
Becky, Georgia, Tom, Alex, Shaun, Steph, Sam and Tom2 were in this and all did their best jumping over a row of little ducks (plastic not real) and not landing on the distance pegs. I believe that all the Cubs got at least a point for this, with a few maybe getting two points.

Flying

The second event we tried was the Cricket Ball Throw.
25m for 3 points, 22m for 2 points and 18m for 1 point.
Ben, Georgia and Steph were in this and all got one point. Someone must have told Georgia that there were extra points if she hit Hathi with the ball as all her throws whistled past his head.

Throwing

The third event was the High Jump.
96cm for 3 points, 30cm for 2 points and 76cm for 1 point.
After following the tracking signs we found the high jump and Becky, Georgia and Steph all were horrified to find that the bar was made of aluminium and looked rather hard. The bar also looked a lot higher than Akela had shown them on the practice night. Steph managed a point and the others sadly didn't. This was despite the encouragement of the rest of our Cubs.

Jumping

Sargent Jump was next
35cm for 3 points, 30cm for 2 points and 25cm for 1 point. (Distance measured above raised hand when stood normally)
Becky, Ben and Georgia took part in this event, Ben managed 3 points with his first jump and the girls got a point each.

The fifth event was the Shuttle run
18sec for 3 points, 19sec for 2 points and 20sec for 1 point.
This was popular with Ben, Tom, Alex, Shaun, Sam and Tom2. Everybody managed a time of 18 seconds except Sam whose first attempt was 21 seconds, when asked if he would like another try he agreed and with everybody supporting him managed to reduce his time by an important second. Shaun asked if could have a second go but when it was pointed out to him that he could not score any more points than he had already got he decided to save his strength.

Shuttling

The sixth event was the 50m Sprint.
9sec for 3 points, 10sec for 2 points and 11 sec for 1 point
As there was a gale blowing and the Cubs were running into it there was an allowance made.
Becky was sneaked into this as her High jump had been a bit of a flop, Ben, Tom, Alex, Shaun, Steph, Sam and Tom2 had a go at this and all achieved something.

The penultimate event was 50m Skipping.
12sec for 3 points, 13sec for 2 points and 14 sec for 1 point.
This being run over the same course as the 50m sprint was made very difficult with the strong wind. Becky and Steph tried their best and hopefully having seen that they did their best points will be awarded appropriately.

The grand finale was the 1000m Run.
5mins for 3 points, 6 mins for 2 points and 10mins for 1 point
Tom, Alex, Shaun and Sam entered this much to the bemusement of Hathi who considers this a distance to take the bus for. Tom did really well treating it as a proper race and despite fading slightly on the last 50m came in a creditable third, but with no extra points. A timing problem will mean that the Judges will need the wisdom of Solomon to sort out the points.

Thanks to all the Akelas that turned out and ran the events, the Cubs for competing, the parents for supporting their Cubs and a really big thank you to Angela for organising it. It was a brilliant morning, or so our Cubs said.
